FRIENDS OF STEVE HARRISON AND PEACE

Anti-war candidate Steve Harrison is running for Congress, and he needs your support!

Steve Harrison is running in the Democratic Primary on September 9th for the open seat in the 13th Congressional District. The District takes in southwest Brooklyn and all of Staten Island. Steve Harrison received the highest percentage of any Democrat against entrenched Republican incumbent Vito Fossella, when he ran in 2006 (43%), and he has been laying the groundwork since then to win the seat for the Democrats in 2008.

This is Steve Harrison's year to win!

As you may know from reading the news, this particular Congressional race has taken some bizarre twists and turns. The incumbent, Vito Fossella, pulled out of the race after a DWI arrest in May and the subsequent disclosure that he had a second, secret family in Virginia. The Republicans then nominated Frank Powers to run for Fossella's seat, but were dealt a major setback when he died in his sleep of a heart attack on June 22nd.

On the Democratic side, Steve Harrison is facing conservative City Councilmember Michael McMahon who jumped into the race when it was clear that Rep. Fossella was not seeking re-election. Unfortunately, the Democratic establishment, including the DCCC, has lined up behind this conservative Democrat.

Progressive candidate Steve Harrison is the only person who stands in the way of another conservative, Blue Dog Democrat getting elected to the House this fall.

From the beginning, Steve Harrison has taken a principled position against the U.S. war in Iraq, bringing this issue to the fore in the race of 2006. McMahon has been sending mixed signals on the war - telling liberal audiences he has now come around to oppose the war and telling the Conservative Party he supports the U.S. mission in Iraq. When his vote could have made a difference in the Council, he voted against resolution 549-A in 2003 that called on President Bush to hold off invading Iraq -- except as a last resort.

During the past two years, Steve Harrison has demonstrated a truly progressive vision in his stated positions on all of the major issues facing Congress. He has called for responsibly ending the war in Iraq and initiating a massive alternative energy program. He supports single payer health care and is a strong advocate for a pro-choice platform.

Steve Harrison has been endorsed by Progressive Democrats of America, Peace Action PAC, Democracy Advancement PAC, Staten Island Democratic Association, American Heritage Democratic Organization, Democracy for New York City, Democratic Organization of Richmond County, Central Brooklyn Independent Democrats, and Lamda Independent Democrats.

Now, we need your endorsement! Your generous contribution to Steve Harrison's campaign will also help us to win this critical House seat that has long been held by conservative Republicans.
