S.I. Democrat Opposes Brooklyn Waste Transfer Station

NY1 News

One of Staten Island's congressional candidates opposes his Democratic rival's plan to build a waste transfer station in Brooklyn.
Democrat Steve Harrison said North Shore Councilman Michael McMahon's plans for a facility in Gravesend would pollute neighboring areas of the borough, as well as Staten Island.

Harrison said the water dredging necessary to build the facility would dig up toxins that could be harmful to the environment.

"After 30 years of illegal toxic assault, Gravesend has the right, the absolute right to expect that the incinerator will not be reopened in a different toxic guise," said Harrison. "Gravesend has the right to environmental justice."

Harrison says the construction could also potentially ignite old ammunition from a ship's capsizing in Gravesend Bay.

A McMahon spokesman released the following statement in response:

"While leading the fight for the most equitable and environmentally progressive solid waste plan in city history, Mike McMahon has consistently raised concerns about this transfer site, and continues to work to explore alternative locations."
