Democratic Candidates Offer Their Questions for Petraeus
By Matt StollerHuffington Post
3500 people and more than 50 Democratic congressional candidates have endorsed a Responsible Plan to End the War in Iraq, a plan validated by retired Generals, national security experts, and profiled in both the Washington Post and Dailykos (and mentioned on This Week with George Stephanopoulos). This is a new power center rooted in Congress, within national security elites, and among activists that offers a responsible approach to national security in which the question is not whether the tactics of the surge are working but whether our presence in Iraq is making us more secure. I've been asking several of the Congressional candidates who endorse the plan what they would ask Petraeus were they in Congress. Here are some of their questions.

Dem Challengers' Iraq Plan (Harrison One of Original Ten)
By Lindsay PritzlaffNBC News
One criticism of Democrats in past elections is that they have railed against President Bush on Iraq without having a plan of their own. But 38 Democratic House challengers along with four Senate contenders have decided to run on a common platform outlining a strategy of withdrawal from Iraq.

Persevere In The Face Of Indifference
By Christopher HayesThe Nation
So at Take Back America, Burner - a former Microsoft manager from the Seattle suburbs who narrowly missed unseating a GOP incumbent in 2006 - with nine other Democratic Congressional challengers released A Responsible Plan to End the War. Developed in collaboration with retired military officers and national security professionals, the plan attracted the support of fifteen additional Democratic Senate and House challengers in the first week after it was unveiled (see ResponsiblePlan.com). Unlike the withdrawal plans offered by both Democratic presidential candidates, the Responsible Plan opposes any residual forces as well as permanent military bases.

By Paul KaneWashington Post
More than three dozen Democratic congressional candidates banded together yesterday to promise that, if elected, they will push for legislation calling for an immediate drawdown of troops in Iraq that would leave only a security force in place to guard the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.

Steve Harrison Supports The Responsible Plan
Joshing PoliticsThe incumbent in New York's 13th Congressional District does not. The "Plan" is a way for us to get out of Iraq and get out quick. Current Congressman Vito Fossella supports Bush's failed war and now it is time to kick him out of the House and put Steve Harrison in his place, so that Staten Island is truly represented in Washington next year.

Time for A Responsible Plan
The View From The Left5 years ago today the shock and awe started in Iraq. Well, I've been shocked and I've been awed at the lengths to which the Bush Administration recklessly and relentlessly have gone to strip away our Constitutional rights to pursue its agenda. But now it's time to move on (actually, it's long past time).

Leadership on Iraq
WeatherdemA group of folks running for Congress released a plan for Iraq yesterday. Entitled "A Responsible Plan To End The War In Iraq", it starts by recognizing that helping Iraq move forward is no longer in the hands of the military. In fact, a military-led solution hasn't been viable for some time now. Maintaining our military presence in occupation fashion will not lead to a situation in which the Iraqis will be able to take complete control of their country. It also addresses examining what went wrong in the lead-up and execution of the invasion and resulting occupation. In order to not make similar mistakes in the future (ahem, Iran), we need to understand how we got to this point.

Ending the War
Atrios"I wholeheartedly endorse this plan as a responsible and forward looking plan for ending the war in Iraq. As Burner and her colleagues correctly note, bringing our troops home is the first, but not the only step that must be taken to ensure a debacle like Iraq never happens again," said Dr. Lawrence Korb, former assistant secretary of defense in the Reagan administration.
"This plan addresses the root causes that allowed the Bush Administration to lead this country into this mess, and sets us in the right direction. I applaud their efforts on this ambitious and sound strategy. This is progressive strength on national security in action."

A Responsible Plan to Exit Iraq
Left in AlabamaThis afternoon (about 1:30 CST) at the Take Back America conference, Washington congressional candidate Darcy Burner and 9 other Democratic Congressional challengers will unveil a plan for getting the U.S. out of Iraq in a responsible way. They hope to convince a number of other challengers -- and dare we hope some incumbents -- to sign onto the plan which will become a roadmap for legislation in the next Congress. Does this remind anyone of Newt Gingrich's Contract with America? As I recall, that worked out pretty well.
